The competition, officially opened by Tangerang Deputy Mayor Maryono, marks a grassroots initiative to identify the city’s most promising Qur’an reciters (Qari/Qari’ah) to represent the district at city, provincial, and national levels. “The people of Tangerang have a deep love for the Qur’an.
This is more than just a competition; it’s about discovering and fostering talents who will bring pride to our region and serve as spiritual role models,” said Maryono during the opening ceremony. The event drew significant community involvement, attended by religious leaders, MUI representatives, local government officials, and residents alike demonstrating a strong communal commitment to Islamic education and tradition. Chairman of the District’s LPTQ (Lembaga Pengembangan Tilawatil Qur’an), this year saw an increase in both participation and enthusiasm. “Alhamdulillah, we’re seeing growing passion among our youth to learn and live by the Qur’an. Participants were selected from RW-level qualifiers, making this one of the most inclusive STQs we’ve ever had,” he shared. Participants competed in five categories: Children’s Tilawah (Recitation), Youth Tilawah, Fahmil Qur’an (Quiz on Qur’anic knowledge), Syahril Qur’an (Interpretive Reading), and Murottal (Measured Recitation).

The competition is scheduled to run for two days with professional judges drawn from various Islamic institutions across Tangerang. The District Head of Tangerang, Yudi Pradana, emphasized the event’s wider impact, describing STQ as both a talent incubator and a spiritual compass in a time of growing societal challenges. “We hope the youth won’t stop at winning trophies.
We want them to internalize the Qur’anic values — to live with wisdom, compassion, and strong moral grounding,” he said.
